- Say where the bird was taken: the municipality is used for validation and never appears in public.
- State the species, hare or red-legged partridge for example, and if you know them, the sex and circumstances of the recovery.
- Send: with no signal, the report goes out on its own as soon as coverage returns.

From report to validation
Once sent, the report is kept; if you left an e-mail address, an acknowledgement follows. The ring number is then matched against known releases; if one took place in a department whose federation is registered, that federation validates the recovery. If no release matches, the report is kept under department 94 and stays out of the public totals. The public only sees totals per department; points on the national map are rounded to about 1 km.

Land cover in 2018 (CORINE Land Cover): artificial surfaces lead with 83%, followed by forests and semi-natural areas (9%). The rest is shared between agricultural areas (6%) and water bodies (1%). With 1,426,929 inhabitants (INSEE, 2022 population count) on about 245 km², the density is roughly 5,824 inhabitants per km²; the department has 47 municipalities. Among the 96 departments of metropolitan France, it ranks 5th from the bottom for the share of agricultural areas (6%). Besides Créteil, the prefecture, the department has two sub-prefectures: L'Haÿ-les-Roses and Nogent-sur-Marne.
